Music Director

St. Bede’s Episcopal Church in Menlo Park has a proud tradition of a music program that is well-known and respected in the community. This includes our choir of volunteers and paid section leads, as well as our “Arts at St. Bede’s” concert series in which outside musician groups play in our church during the program year.

The Music Director position at St. Bede’s is a 20 hour-per-week position with paid time off included, and is directly supervised by the parish’s rector. Our parish has traditionally held two services each Sunday, a spoken Rite I without music and a Rite II Holy Eucharist with music. The choir will typically join us in worship from September through May and take a break during the summer months. In these summer months we still sing hymns as a congregation and members of the parish frequently play piano or other instrumental music during services. Our Arts at St. Bede’s concert series has traditionally held six to nine events per year. Our Vestry has been in discussion about the shape and role that this series will play in our parish in the coming years, which is something that we will hope to discuss with our next Music Director.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the parish initially went to a single service on Zoom in which the music director instructed the choir to record themselves singing and then she edited the music to be incorporated in our stream. Starting May 23rd, 2021 we began holding in-person/Zoom services; our Music Director was actively involved in planning our Sunday worship, including music and liturgical decisions. We’ve held a handful of Arts at St. Bede’s concerts since May, with a few more planned for late spring at this point.

Typical responsibilities for the Music Director position include oversight of the music program including our organist and choir, planning music for our worship in collaboration with our rector and lay member(s) of our liturgy planning team, administration of the music program such as reporting usage of musical pieces and timesheets for section leads and organist, and oversight of care for items such as choir robes, sheet music, and instruments.

This position will remain posted until position is filled.
